PERSONAL INSURANCE
It’s important to have personal insurance for a trip like this. Even if you’ve already got travel insurance, check with your provider that the insurance you have covers you and your bike for a trip of this nature. You should also have a European Health Insurance Card. If you have an existing EHIC, it will remain valid until the expiry date on the card. Once your current card expires, you'll need to apply for a new card. You can apply for a new card up to 6 months before your current card expires and can get one by clicking here.BIKE EQUIPMENT
You’ll need to make sure that you have a bike that’s in good working order, a helmet, and the relevant cycling clothing. We suggest you use a road bike or a hybrid. We’ll also have plenty of water and energy stops – but do bring your own bottle (or two) for your bike too. It might also be worth investing in some padded shorts they make a real difference!Your additional kit will be carried by the support vehicles throughout the three days. Do contact us if you have any questions about your bike or kit list. We do not carry reserve bikes, so in the unfortunate circumstance that your bike is beyond repair, we can arrange a rental bike for you (additional costs apply) from the nearest bike rental shop. Though in our experience most repairs can be done at the roadside.
PERSONAL ITEMS
You’ll also need all the usual things that you’d pack for a weekend away – toiletries, money and, of course, your passport. Check you’ve got six months left on your passport, to be on the safe side. Entry requirements for travel to France can be found here.Checklist - see full kit list

OUR ROUTE
-
DAY 1 - Munich to Garmisch-Partenkirchen | 71.1 miles
Our first day can be described as following the Isar River to the mountains!
We’ll start at the Pega Munich office around 9.00 am and the first leg of our ride takes us out of the city to the small town of Sauerlach, where we’ll have a short break for a coffee and a brezel from a local bakery.
From Sauerlach we continue on small country roads towards Bad Tölz, with the mountains always in sight a great place for our lunch break on the market square. This is a truly beautiful place and a great place for us to relax.
The square is decorated with a collection of alpine-style houses of old ages and a place where wood and Italian fine goods were traded many years before after being transported up through the Alps, which we can see in the distance.
After the lunch break, we follow the Isar River up to the Sylvenstein Lake, where a barrier is being used to produce green energy and we continue along the lake to the small village of Vorderriss, where we can have a lemonade or a “Radlermass” in a wonderful beer garden.
Now the most beautiful stretch of this ride is upon us – for the next 13km the Isar is a real wild river, that changes its bed constantly depending on rain, snow, and other conditions.
Once we reach Wallgau after 14km, we head for the final stretch of the day which takes us down to Garmisch-Partenkirchen, where we’ll arrive at the hotel, have dinner, and reflect on our first day’s cycling adventure!
-
DAY 2 - Garmisch-Partenkirchen to Kempten | 68.9 miles
Our second day can be described as a day of Churches and Castles!
After a great night’s rest and healthy breakfast, we will be ready for the second day of our cycling challenge.
We will start at 8.00 am and our cycling route will follow the Loisach valley to Oberau, where our first challenge of the day will be the 230m climb to the Ettal Benedictine monastery. This is an achievable climb for everyone, but we will have the TFA team on hand to support us.
At the top, we will have an amazing view and then we will continue to Oberammergau where we will have a short break. This is a very famous area for the place of the famous passion play about the life and death of Jesus, which has been performed every 10 years since the 17th century. Here we’ll stop for a short break.
From Oberammergau, we continue our ride on small country roads to the famous Wieskirche, a masterpiece of the Baroque age. Here we’ll have another short stop. Make sure you go inside and admire its beauty.
Our next leg takes us to Füssen, where we’ll have our lunch break at the foot of the Neuschwanstein Castle, the Blueprint for the Disney Castle. We will allow for enough time to walk up to the famous Marienbridge, where the best selfies are made!
After this highlight, we’ll continue at around 3.00 pm towards Kempten, through beautiful meadows with grazing cows and the stunning mountains always to our left.
A stop on the way will make this - the longest stretch of the day - easy and on arriving in Kempten, we’ll check into our hotel, have dinner, and reflect on our second day of cycling.
-
DAY 3 - Kempten to Lindau | 50.9 miles
Our third day can be described as a day of amazing views and of course, celebrations!
Day 3 does have the shortest distance of the three days of cycling, but the most elevation, Torquay riders, you’ll be used to this! We take a relaxed start after breakfast at 8:30 am. Our first stop will be Isny, a beautiful small town of Isny, with a fully intact city wall and a historic centre.
From Isny we head for the Pfänder, the mountain overlooking the lake of Constance from the East. While this leg is only 36km long, it has a constant (but mostly gentle) climb of 540m, as the mountain’s top is at 1,000m.
You will be rewarded for your pedaling with lunch and a spectacular view across the lake, the Swiss Alps, and the Allgäu. On a clear day, you can see up to 150km from here. You can also claim, that you’ve been to Austria on the trip, as we’re about 10km into Austria now.
After a relaxing long break, it’s the final stretch down to Lindau, the beautiful island city in the Lake of Constance. You’ll have a 600m decline on 15km to enjoy, so better make sure your brakes are in good shape!
We’ll arrive at Lindau around 4.00 pm and are ready for our celebration. After that, there’s time for a swim in the lake, the public beach is only 250m from the hotel.
The following day we will return home via the train to Munich, where you will be reunited with your bike. If you are staying on longer do let us know as soon as possible so we can make necessary arrangements for your travel home and bike storage (charges may apply).
